Planning

There is nothing more important in your landscape than proper planning  Planning for the current season or for the next 100 years.  Many landscapes today are designed to be "disposable".To see a complete landscape uprooted every 5 or 10 years is unfortunate.  A well designed landscape can be updated and renovated for a different look without bulldozing it!  I believe in taking chances with landscape materials on only a very limited basis ("pushing the envelope" with climate zone recommendations, etc) .The structure of your landscape Must be built on a strong foundation. The grade and drainage have to be correct--the Important plants (trees and shrubs) need to be appropriate for the location and growing conditions--the sprinkler system(spray and drip) needs to be appropriate for the landscape Now, and scalable to provide proper watering as the trees and shrubs mature.A properly designed landscape provides a green, vibrant visual, and , serene experience  --and should continue to do so for many years.  It must Look good AND Last!

Seasonal Planning

Some things are "Time Sensitive" and need to be done Soon(or at least scheduled soon!)

       Pruning

Now is the best time to do the corrective and "Bearing" pruning on many Fruit Trees and Shade Trees and Deciduous shrubs.  Young trees often need corrective pruning in the first few years to make sure they become upstanding stable mature trees. Exercise caution on some varieties (Maple and Birch for example), as bleeding may occur as the sap rises in Spring.

Lawn Program            I usually begin my Lawn program applications in March--sometimes between snow storms.Getting an early start with a premium slow release fertilizer is important.Letting nature water-in the fertilizer is a benefit because most sprinkler systems aren't in use yet.

         Spring Cleanup

Usually in Mid April (Natures calendar-not man's!)  We typically cut back last years flowers and remove weeds and debris from the Winter, then perform minor pruning(Roses, etc.) ,core aerate, power rake, then hand rake and dispose of debris.Power raking is an inefficient way to remove "thatch" and I don't recommend it for that purpose.  It is mostly aesthetic(Makes it look better) , but is a great way to remove the cores left after core aeration that many people find objectionable.  Studies have shown that Power raking only removes 5% to 15% of thatch.  Proper cultural practices such as proper mowing length, watering amounts and frequency are more effective at Preventing thatch.  If thatch is already present, we have "natural" microbial agents that help eliminate thatch over time.
